DigiTimes has published a report stating that Samsung could begin using processors from MediaTek next year. MediaTek, whose processors currently power the majority of handsets from manufacturers in countries such as India and China, will reportedly enter Samsung’s supply chain in the latter half of 2014, and offer both quad- and octa-core chipsets to the world’s largest smartphone maker.
Provided what the report says is true, we will likely see Samsung using MediaTek’s chipsets in its low-end and mid-range devices (they currently use Broadcom’s), while sticking to the Exynos chip for flagship devices. Despite being quad-core and octa-core chips, MediaTek’s processors target the affordable segment of the smartphone market, providing respectable performance at a low cost, and a partnership with Samsung would help MediaTek further strengthen its hold on the mobile chipset industry.
