Samsung reportedly focusing on making 20nm mobile chips a reality in 2014

According to a report published by Taiwanese publication DigiTimes, Samsung is working on setting up factories for building chips based on a 20nm (nanometers) process, with the intentions of offering these chips in early 2014. Current mobile chips, whether from Qualcomm, Samsung, or MediaTek, are all built on a 28nm process, and a switch to 20nm would mean theoretically faster speeds and lower power usage.

Samsung has reportedly shifted R&D resources its 14nm factories to step up development of the 20nm chips, in an attempt to compete with rival chip supplier TSMC, whose 20nm facilities are already operating at 20-30% yield rates. However, don’t expect to see these new chips being used in actual devices next year, at least in the first half. The Galaxy S6 will likely use a 20nm chip, but for now, we’ll have to be content with all the performance we’re getting from standard 28nm processors.
