Samsung is infamous for taking lots of inspiration (read: infringe) from other manufacturers for its smartphone hardware design and software features (though they’ve stopped doing it since a year or so), but it looks like they aren’t innocent of doing that when it comes to another kind of mobile device – vacuum cleaners – either. Vacuum maker Dyson is suing Samsung for “cynically” ripping off its patented vacuum steering system in its own Motion Sync vacuum cleaner that was announced at the IFA last week.
Samsung has reportedly stolen ideas from a 2009 patent on a fast-steering system that lets vacuums swivel separate from the wheels, and Dyson founder Sir James Dyson finds it “hard not to believe that this is a deliberate or utterly reckless infringement of our patent.” Samsung has denied the accusation and will reportedly fight back against Dyson. ”We will take all necessary measures, including legal actions, to protect our technological innovation against Dyson’s groundless claims,” said a spokeswoman.
This isn’t the first time Dyson has sued Samsung, as it won a case against the Korean manufacturer in 2009 for stealing their vacuum mechanism, but in this particular case there’s no official word on whether Dyson will be asking for a licensing fee or an outright ban on Samsung’s newly announced vacuum cleaner.
Patent battles, they never abate. But hey, they’re fun sometimes, so let’s see where this goes!
