Galaxy Nexus owners launch petition for Google to get Android 4.4 KitKat update

The Galaxy Nexus isn’t getting an update to Android 4.4 KitKat. That announcement made a lot of owners of the device rather unhappy, and while custom ROMs will make the device live on for a few years to come, the lack of an official update will forever eat away at people’s insides. On that front, one Galaxy Nexus user has went ahead and launched a petition, asking Sundar Pichai, head of Android (and Chrome), to update the Galaxy Nexus to Android 4.4 before retiring support for it.

The problem is, the petition might not do much to change Google’s minds. The biggest issue here is the lack of updated binaries and hardware drivers for the OMAP chipset powering the Galaxy Nexus – Texas Instruments (TI) is no longer making mobile processors, so getting them to update the OMAP platform will be impossible, which would be the most important obstacle. Of course, Google could work some magic to solve the issue (the community does update devices unofficially, after all), but with the standard 18-month support period now over, the search giant probably won’t want to spend resources on doing so.

Hit the source link to sign the petition, and keep your fingers crossed that Google takes a look and listens to what Galaxy Nexus owners are saying. It’s still a good device, and leaving it at Android 4.3 when Android 4.4 boasts of impressive optimization and reduced memory usage seems downright evil.
